Thanks Ahmadinejad
President Ahmadinejad said this week that Israel will desintegrate like the USSR. There is some truth to that risk. In the last couple of decades, Israel nearly lost its way. The jewish people had a sense that guided it for 100 years: to build the state of Israel. We called that Zionism. After the 80's, there was that empty feeling of a task completed. We built the state, we made it into a great country, we dried the wetlands, we made the desert flourish, we build world-class companies, we pioneered science. Now what? What is the meaning of Zionism now that we have a successful state? We had become a nation like all other nations.
Israel became strong, and strong people can afford to be selfish. For thousands of years the jewish people had a deep sense of community and solidarity. That sense has deep roots, but the main cause has always been the external aggressions. Without aggression the need for solidarity began to vanish. Israelis can afford to be selfish. Jews abroad feel less attached to Israel, and vice-versa. Without those aggressions, we begun to crumble, just like the USSR.
Enter Ahmadinejad. There are few things that infuriate jews all over the world more that his blind, stupid denial of the holocaust, or, for that matter, the threat of a new one. Ahmadinejad's logic is amazingly contradictory, and thus it is even more aggraviating. He claims that there was not a Holocaust, and at the same time he threatens to create one. He starts a conference in the name of "free press", in Iran, where the Internet is forbidden, a really funny joke except no one is laughing. He sponsors terror and then threatens to take Peres to the international courts for interfering with Iran's internal affairs.
And he claims that Israel will crumble like the USSR, while he is the single one person that has contributed most to Israel's fortification as a nation. There is one thing that threats our existence, and that is the lack of aggression. Leave us alone, and we may destroy ourselves. Attack us and we will unite like never before.
Thanks Ahmadinejad, in your quest to end Zionism you have given Zionism a new sense, at least for the next couple of decades.
